Industrial IoT:IoT Applications IoT Applications Branch.

The IoT space is full of acronyms, from LPWAN to MQTT to IoT itself. There are many branches of IoT in application areas, one of which is the Internet of Things, representing the wireless module Industrial IoT.

Industrial IoT and the Internet of Things.

The IoT adds value in three main areas: improving efficiency, improving health/safety and creating a better experience. The Industrial IoT addresses only the first two areas, namely efficiency and health/safety.

Industrial IoT is one of the subcategories of IoT. IoT includes industrial IoT, asset tracking, remote monitoring, wearable devices, etc. Industrial IoT is particularly focused on industrial applications, such as manufacturing or agriculture.

Huge industrial IoT potential.

The Industrial IoT will transform many industries, including manufacturing, oil and gas, agriculture, mining, transportation, and healthcare. Collectively, these account for nearly two-thirds of the world economy.

In recent years, the convergence of hardware, connectivity, big data analytics and machine learning innovations has opened up huge opportunities for the industry. Hardware innovation means lower cost, more powerful sensors and longer battery life. Connectivity innovation means it's cheaper and easier to send data from those sensors to the cloud. Big data analytics and machine learning innovations mean that once sensor data is collected, it is possible to gain powerful insights into the manufacturing process. These innovations can greatly improve productivity and reduce costs.

An example that reflects the potential of the Industrial IoT is predictive maintenance. Machines that break during manufacturing can mean millions of dollars in lost productivity, and factories can only stop production to solve the problem.

The solution in the past has been to schedule maintenance on a regular basis, but there are a number of problems. What if a machine breaks down before maintenance? As mentioned above, this would result in a huge loss of productivity.

Predictive maintenance involves using more sensors to collect data on the machine and then using data analysis and machine learning to determine when the machine needs maintenance. Too much maintenance can lead to machine damage, and too much maintenance too early can lead to misallocation of resources.

Predictive maintenance is just one example that has been applied to reality. As the Industrial Internet of Things is adopted and evolves, the changes will be profound. Eventually, we can achieve an autonomous economy. In this economy, supply can fully meet demand, thus completely optimizing the production process and achieving zero waste.
