Disposable bamboo products, bamboo furniture, bamboo fiber clothing... At the 2021 China International Trade in Services Expo, a variety of green low-carbon products made from bamboo attracted many visitors to stop and consult.
According to statistics, the world produces nearly 400 million tons of plastic for packaging, construction and other uses every year. Plastic pollution and its health hazards are a growing concern worldwide, and countries are seeking the best solutions to replace plastic products.
During this service fair, INBAR, together with three Chinese bamboo product enterprises, set up a special exhibition and jointly organized an international seminar on bamboo instead of plastic with China Bamboo Industry Association and International Center for Bamboo and Rattan. With the vision of helping to achieve peak carbon and carbon neutrality goals, participants from around the world talked about the green and low-carbon path of replacing plastics with bamboo.
There are more than 1,600 known species of bamboo plants in the world, bamboo teaspoon and bamboo forests cover more than 35 million hectares and are widely distributed in developing countries and regions in Asia, Africa and the Americas.
Bamboo plays a unique role in addressing a range of global challenges. Bamboo development contributes to poverty alleviation, bamboo raw materials can be converted into biomass, bamboo forests can function as powerful carbon sinks, bamboo building materials can improve living conditions, and bamboo plants are an important component of healthy ecosystems and biodiverse landscapes. Jiang Zehui, Co-Chairman of the Board of Directors of INBAR, Director of the International Center for Bamboo and Rattan and Member of the International Academy of Timber Sciences, said that seven of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals are closely related to bamboo.
Bamboo is the fastest growing plant in the world and can take shape quickly in 3-5 years. Bamboo roots, poles and leaves can be utilized in their entirety, making it an ideal source of renewable fiber. Bamboo offers a nature-based solution to plastic pollution. says Muqium, Director General of the International Organization for Bamboo and Rattan.
Today, the bamboo industry value chain covers all aspects of production and life. From disposable bamboo bags, bottles, paper, packaging, straws, crockery, cups and cutlery to more durable products including electronic equipment cases, watches, eyeglass frames... Bamboo products can replace plastic products in many areas.
Muqiuam said INBAR is committed to promoting international recognition of bamboo as a nature-based solution and the inclusion of bamboo resources in national development strategies and action plans. Nearly 40 countries have adopted plastic bans or restrictions in the 48 member countries of INBAR. Many companies have started to produce bamboo products instead of plastic products.
China is one of the most important bamboo-producing countries in the world, with bamboo resources, bamboo forest area, bamboo volume, bamboo production and foreign trade of bamboo products ranking among the top in the world. China's bamboo recycling industry chain consists of bamboo forest planting, harvesting, storage, processing, marketing and reuse, resulting in nearly 10,000 products in 10 fields.
According to the person in charge of the International Cooperation Department of the National Forestry and Grass Bureau, China's bamboo industry has become a fundamental and strategic industry to achieve rural revitalization, to lift farmers out of poverty, to guarantee national ecological security, timber security and food security, and to support the construction of the Belt and Road.
Some people in charge of bamboo products processing enterprises said that there are some challenges in the development of the bamboo products industry, such as the higher price of bamboo products compared with plastic products, and the processing technology of bamboo products needs to be improved.
Fei Benhua, executive deputy director of the International Center for Bamboo and Rattan, suggested promoting the development of the bamboo industry, increasing the basic research on bamboo forests and bamboo materials, accelerating the formation of a standard system for bamboo materials, and innovating bamboo storage technology. Advocate bamboo instead of plastic, develop alternatives to plastic in multiple fields, and carry out research on the recycling application and durability of bamboo products.
