U.N. Secretary-General Guterres spoke to coincide with the anniversary of the birth of former President Nelson Mandela, who was instrumental in repealing South Africa's segregation policy, and called on countries to invest more in education, saying it was necessary to ensure that everyone was fairly educated to eliminate the gap between rich and poor and racial discrimination.
The United Nations has designated July 18, when former President Mandela was born, as "Nelson Mandela International Day," and this year Secretary General Guterres participated online in a commemorative event in South Africa.
Mr. Guterres spoke under the title "Confronting the Spread of Injustice", and expressed the recognition that various injustices are spreading around the world, saying that "the unfairness that Mr. Mandela has fought has now reached a critical situation in the world."
Specifically, the top 1% of the world's overall income growth accumulated in the 37 years to 2016, and a survey last year showed that the penetration rate of the Internet was 87% in developed countries, compared with 19% in least developed countries.
On top of that, Mr. Guterres quoted Mandela as "education is the strongest weapon that will change the world, "Education and digital technology have an unfair effect. The government should give priority to fair access to everyone, from preschool education to lifelong education.", he said, calling on countries to invest more in education.
