Welcome to the classroom of super tutor Anthony Fok,a well-known face of Singapore'sbooming private tutor scene. He's speciality is 'A' Level economics, and talk about knowing your numbers, his private tutoring empire brings inmore than $1 million a year. When I started in the year 2013,there were only about three to four students.
It was a very small class size, three to four students, and I knew the students personally during that time.So it was a small class, and soon through the word of mouth, I am teaching about 200 to 300 students a year.Fok is part of an elite group of Singapore super tutorscharging top dollar for top grades.A seat here costs more than $400 a month. But for parents, it's a small price to payto try and give their children a leg-upin Singapore's highly competitive school system.I have encountered parentswho are willing to pay up to $25,000to guarantee the 'A' grades, nearing the 'A' Level exams.Seven out of every 10 studentsattend weekend enrichment classes, and there are more than 800 tuition centers just like this, registered with the government.18 year old Ang Ming Liang saystuition is just a normal part of school life.Majority of my classmates are indeed taking tuition. So there is this sort of pressure to try to achieve, and tuition is seen like a necessary componentto make yourself more competitive in such a climate.
Fok is one of many tutors capitalizing ona culture that demands academic success.Fellow super tutor Janice Chua, left her teaching joband started Concept Math in 2011.She now operates two major centers, responsible for almost 1,000 children who are as young as seven.Even at the primary one level, the parents are very "kan-cheong",the local term for being "very anxious",to get their kids to have a head start in school. She credits her success to plain hard work, but she says the culture of educationis rapidly changing. The Ministry of Education has actually introduceda more broad based way of banding the children,so the focus is definitely moving away fromjust grades to a more holistic education. Those changes are still about five years away, but reforming the competitive mindset of parentscould take even more time.Dan Murphy, CNBC
